North By Northwest, along with Psycho and The Birds, is probably one of the most widely seen of the great master’s films. Pauline Kael proclaims on the DVD cover that North By Northwest is “one of Hitchcock’s most entertaining American thrillers.” If Hitchcock made a James Bond movie it would be something like this. It does mean there are plenty of gems to enjoy after Psycho’s credits have rolled. His body of work is truly astonishing and not matched by anyone. Perhaps best known for Psycho, Hitchcock’s trademarks – voyeurism, suspense, and the wronged man/woman – can be seen in films stretching across a career that began in the 1920s, took off in 1935 with The 39 Steps, and wouldn’t end until Family Plot in 1976.
